Happy Saint Andrew’s Day!
Saint Andrew’s philosophy in life was to help others and to share everything he had with those less fortunate. At Macsween, we also believe in taking every opportunity to help others. That’s why we have partnered with Fareshare to ensure that any leftover food we have goes to those who need it.
Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year, and at the same time, millions of people are struggling to afford to eat. After overproducing a new product in 2009, we wanted to avoid wastage and reached out the local community to find a partner who could use this additional stock. It was then that we became aware of Fareshare and its plight and have worked with them ever since.
As the largest food distribution charity in the UK. Fareshare aims is to fight hunger, reduce food waste and relieve food poverty throughout the UK. By rescuing good quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, they can redistribute it to charitable organisations across the UK.
One such community group which receives Fareshare’s support is the Newtongrange After School Club in Lothian. This year, some of our surplus haggis stock went to the afterschool club to offer the students a delicious haggis, neeps and tatties St. Andrew’s supper. It was happy faces all round!
