Green Business Awards Highly Commended

Macsween of Edinburgh, the leading Scottish food brand, has been Highly Commended in the ‘waste reduction’ category of the prestigious UK Green Business Awards 2009.

Jo Macsween, Director of Macsween said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised for our hard work in greatly reducing the waste that we send to landfill.  It is testament to the huge efforts made by everyone throughout the company.”

The judges stated that “this is a great performance, especially for an SME dealing with difficult food waste.”

Macsween’s waste reduction strategy encompasses reuse of card and paper, recycling of plastic supply packaging, waste oils and fats and composting of organic waste.  These measures have seen the company move from 60% landfilling (of all wastes) in 2006 to 10% in 2009.  Macsween is now concentrating on recycling this final 10% of waste currently sent to landfill.  More information on the programme and other environmental initiatives will be included in the next Macsween Sustainability Report, to be published before the end of 2009.

Macsween was the only company to achieve Highly Commended status within the Waste Reduction category.  The winner, Denso Manufacturing UK, is part of the global Denso Corporation and the other finalists included Buxton Press, Guys & St Thomas’s Hospital and Home Retail Group.
