The judges recognised the company's public and ongoing commitment to environmental excellence, which was a major contributing factor in the coveted business of the year award win.
The judging panel said that Macsween displayed strong management commitment, had set clear company goals and effectively communicated procedures to achieve environmental progress and business success.
Jo Macsween, Director, said, “Environmental management is a major priority for us – it’s an integral part of the way we do business, and an integral part of our success. To be recognised for something we take great pride in, especially within our own industry, is a wonderful boost.”

As a long-standing family firm, Macsween has always taken a responsible approach to business. However, in 2001 company director James Macsween initiated a more structured and proactive system of environmental management. This is now summarised in Macsween's environmental policy and its first corporate environmental report, published in 2008. A more wide-reaching sustainability report will be published in 2009.
“88% of our factory waste is now recycled, and we expect this to be 100% by 2010. So none of our waste will end up in a landfill site - which is good for the environment and good for our bottom line,” said Jo.
Macsween’s approach is extending to its suppliers, too. “We request all our suppliers to have environmental policies in place, and to let us know how they’re tracking against these policies,” said Jo.
“It’s important we work with our suppliers in order to achieve a truly sustainable product – which, at the end of the day, is our ultimate goal.”
The Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards 2009 was administered and sponsored by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, in association with Scotland Food and Drink.
