Macsween of Edinburgh, the leading haggis producer, has secured wide distribution through Morrisons supermarkets. This will see its products enlivening the aisles in England and Wales, as well as all Morrisons stores in Scotland. The roll-out will allow many more people to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth on 25th January.
Jo Macsween said:
“We are delighted that Morrisons has responded to the growing and significant demand for our haggis south of the border. As guardians of Scotland’s national dish, we wish to see more people enjoying this nutritious and versatile ingredient.”
Macsween has seen significant growth in its sales in Scotland and throughout the UK over the past five years. Sales in England now outstrip those in Scotland and the company’s classic vegetarian haggis now accounts for 25% of all sales. While demand soars around Burns Night, the company has broadened its products’ appeal and is selling more to individual consumers and corporate caterers throughout the year.
Ian Lovell, Senior Fresh Food Buyer at Morrisons, said:
“The Macsween brand is strong, particularly in Scotland, therefore we want to take its traditional haggis to our customers in England and Wales. For those unfamiliar with this tasty dish, it’s the perfect opportunity to try it in its standard form or in a lasagne, pies and many other recipes.”
Haggis is indelibly linked to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Born on the 25th January 1759 in Ayrshire, his birth is celebrated at Burns suppers, where haggis is consumed with great gusto and great ceremony. The 250th birthday in 2009 has been designated the year of Homecoming, during which Burns life and work will be celebrated throughout the world as well as home in Scotland.
